MONEY MATTERS: Don't Blow Your Christmas Budget!

Don't get the January blues when the credit card statements come rolling in from all of your holiday spending. Decide up front how much you'll be spending on each category, write down what you've spent, and stay on track!

  1. Decide who you'll be buying for - don't forget any wrapping necessities! Sit down with your spouse (if you have one) and make a list of each person that you intend to purchase a gift for. Will you be hosting any parties? Make sure you budget for those as well.

  2. Decide how much you'll spend on each person/category. Deciding up front helps keep you on track, and gives you some boundaries. Have a kid with a large item on their wish list - this may be an easy way to say "no" - it's the budget's fault!

  3. Keep a list of all presents purchased - this also helps from hiding presents and forgetting about them! I started doing this a few years ago, and it has helped remind me what gifts to bring out for each person. I have a spreadsheet- don't laugh!
